Projects
Admission to the Engineering Academy is highly competitive, requiring students to take and pass a qualifying entrance exam. Acceptance marked the start of a four-year, project-based engineering curriculum.
Introduction to Engineering
Isometric & Orthographic Views Sketch
Translated design concepts into accurate isometric and orthographic sketches. Precise visualization is the first step from idea to buildable plan — a skill that helps prevent costly mistakes further down the line.
CAD Software Basics — Onshape
Built on those sketches to apply CAD fundamentals in Onshape, translating hand-drawn concepts into structured digital models. The project reflected a detail-driven, methodical approach to moving from concept to execution.
Build & Test Structures
Followed the full engineering design loop — brainstorming, building, testing, and presenting results — using real performance data to validate design choices and guide each round of iteration. The process reinforced a problem-solving approach grounded in evidence, collaboration, and continuous improvement.
Digital Electronics
Breadboards & Circuits
Built and tested logic gate circuits on breadboards, tracing how inputs translate into measurable outputs. The work reflects a systems-first, measurable approach to problem-solving.
Logic Gates Fundamentals
Studied how digital systems function at the component level, building the foundation for the data-driven, logic-based thinking that underlies both engineering and analytics.
Principles of Engineering
-
Paper Floor
Worked in a team to build two load-bearing floor levels using only paper and masking tape, competing to hold the most books. Carried the project from brainstorming through a final presentation, refining the design by combining the strongest ideas from each teammate. Reflects effective collaboration and iterative problem-solving under real material constraints.
Career Presentation
Researched different engineering fields using credible sources and delivered findings under a strict time limit. Demonstrates independent research skills and the ability to communicate complex information clearly and concisely.
-
Cable Car
Co-designed a device to move an object as far as possible across a room under strict material and momentum constraints. Reflects a results-focused, strategic approach shaped by rapid testing and iteration.
Engineering the Future
Independently researched how a specific engineer shaped society, then built and delivered a slideshow presentation to the class. The project sharpened storytelling and public-speaking skills — feedback that stuck: the presentation was said to flow "like a story."
Cantilever Design Challenge
Co-designed a cantilever beam engineered to extend at least 30 centimeters while supporting maximum load, informed by research into real-world cantilever applications. Demonstrates an understanding of key design tradeoffs and evidence-based iteration.
Beam Deflection
Researched the factors that influence beam deflection, then used Onshape to design a 6-meter stage that met a strict 1-centimeter deflection safety limit. Reflects a rigorous, math-informed approach to designing within real-world safety constraints.
-
Modulus of Elasticity
Measured material behavior through hands-on beam deflection tests, calculating modulus of elasticity from real deflection data. Demonstrates active, quantitative learning applied directly to real-world outcomes.
-
Moment
Built a balance beam using VEX parts to study how force and perpendicular distance combine to produce rotational moment. Reflects hands-on learning tied directly to concept mastery and stable, measurable structure-building.
-
Bridge
Designed a bridge in Bridge Design Software to meet strict cost, efficiency, and structural criteria; the design was selected for construction, built in Onshape, laser-cut from balsa wood, and load-tested until failure. Presented the results to the class through a slide deck and poster. Reflects the ability to optimize for performance and cost while clearly communicating engineering decisions.
Stress and Strain
Selected to teach classmates the unit on stress and strain — planning lessons, coordinating activities, and preparing supplementary materials after school. The lesson was well-received enough that the teacher entered the team in a state competition. Demonstrates leadership, reliability, and the ability to turn learning objectives into genuine engagement.
-
Simple Machines
Researched simple machines with a partner — including the pulley, lever, wedge, inclined plane, wheel and axle, and screw — then built a working model and taught it to the class through a slideshow and hands-on demonstration. Reflects the ability to translate technical concepts into real-world, teachable applications.
-
Top Gear
Studied gear ratios, speed, and torque with a partner to design and build both simple and compound gear trains using VEX parts. Demonstrates systems thinking and the ability to translate mechanical principles into working performance.
Energy Source and Distribution
Researched multiple energy sources with a partner — including wind, fossil fuels, solar, and nuclear — and built a slideshow analyzing one in depth, from how it's harvested to its infrastructure needs, economic tradeoffs, and career opportunities in the field. Reflects the ability to connect technical topics to broader societal and economic context.
-
Solar Hydrogen Cell
Partnered to power a small vehicle using solar, fuel cell, and battery sources, following the full design process from concept sketches to a tested prototype. The build drew on skills from across the Engineering Academy — digital electronics, physics, and technical sketching — to optimize for weight and speed. Reflects the ability to iterate quickly and apply connected knowledge to improve real-world performance.
-
Engineering Design and Development
-
Capstone
Senior-year, year-long Capstone research project conducted in partnership with Project Lead the Way (PLTW), addressing the issue of stray animals from start to finish — problem identification, stakeholder research, a full engineering design process, prototyping, testing, and a final presentation. The process spanned every stage of product development, from CAD modeling and manufacturing considerations to budgeting and critical design review. Along the way, she defined project requirements and constraints, documented each stage of progress, tracked the timeline through a Gantt chart, collaborated with a team toward shared objectives, and engaged with mentors for professional guidance before presenting the final solution and implementation. Reflects organization, resilience, and the ability to turn research into a structured solution strategy.
-
Skills for Success
Growth accelerates when you can assess skills, document learning, and apply feedback consistently. Partnered to research key professional skills — communication & networking, design process, proper documentation, healthy teamworking practices, intellectual property maintenance, and rubric & element evaluation — then selected one to present to the class using a creative format. Reflects maturity in research and the ability to communicate insights responsibly.
-
Water Filtration
Led a team to design a working prototype that filtered dirty or salt water into clean drinking water, complete with a storage compartment and simple, user-friendly operation. Presented the testing process through an iMovie video, using audience engagement to keep the presentation dynamic. Reflects a solution-driven, user-aware approach focused on continuous improvement.
-
Physics 1
Collaborated with a team to design and build a mousetrap-powered car, competing for distance and speed using only the stored energy released from a spring-loaded trap. Reflects the ability to apply physics principles — energy transfer, friction, and motion — to a hands-on, constraint-driven build.
